Across three Chicagoland campuses, Loyola University Chicago is engaged in numerous sustainability efforts, making it one of the greenest colleges in the Midwest. This explainer provides a sneak-peek of what’s happening at Loyola while encouraging viewers to learn more.

The Project

Loyola’s 2022 print and digital magazine centered on the theme of Our Shared Home—how students and faculty are working towards environmental justice. While the magazine had features on student activism and faculty research, it was missing a piece on sustainable facilities and operations on campus. I realized that a video map walking viewers through these initiatives could be a worthwhile addition to the digital magazine.

After doing my intial research, I created a storyboard that showed how the video would move from scene to scene. This is where I developed my zoom transition idea.

Ultimately, some of my original ideas were scrapped. I originally planned to discuss electric car charging stations on campus before deciding instead to focus on LEED-certified buildings.

The Process

Our Green Campuses was created after a good deal of research and conversation with the sustainability staff at Loyola. After choosing a specific initiative to highlight on each campus, I began illustrating assets and storyboarding a way to move seamlessly from one location to the next. I wanted to make viewers feel that they were being taken along for a ride, so I developed a zoom and draw-on animation to move between scenes. I also wrote a short script that would give additional context to each scene.

While maps of each campus use pinpoints to show a variety of places where green intiatives are happening, each map detailed one specific effort, like having sustainable dining options.

The Product

Sustainability is one of Loyola’s strongest attributes—something that many students cite as a reason they choose to attend the university. In Our Green Campuses, the university’s commitment is on full display. Prospective students can learn more about these efforts while also being introduced to the geography and landscape of campus.
